Carignan (25%) and Syrah (10%)
Mas Doix Salanques is a highly-regarded, structured red wine from Spain's Priorat region, produced by the Celler Mas Doix winery in Poboleda, known for its blend of old-vine Grenache (Garnacha) and Carignan (Cariñena) with some Syrah, aged in French oak, offering rich fruit, spice, and minerality from slate soils.
Key Characteristics
- Winery: Celler Mas Doix, founded in 1998 by the Llagostera brothers.
- Region: Priorat, Spain (DOQ Priorat).
- Grapes: Primarily Grenache (around 65-70%), Carignan (20-25%), and Syrah (10%).
- Vineyards: Grapes come from old vines (some centenary) on steep slate (llicorella) slopes at altitude, contributing to minerality and concentration.
- Winemaking: Hand-harvested, double-sorted, fermented with temperature control, and aged 14 months in French oak barrels (new and used).
- Flavor Profile: Expect ripe red and black fruits (raspberry, plum), floral notes, dark chocolate, vanilla, spices, and earthy minerality.
- Style: Full-bodied, elegant, powerful, and structured, with excellent aging potential.
- Food Pairing: Excellent with red meats (lamb, beef), stews, mushrooms, and hard cheeses.
